Earl and Jean came to Delaware eight years ago from the Diocese of Easton. They have shared a vital and effective ministry at St. Paul’s, in the Georgetown community, and in our diocese. They plan to leave at the end of August. While we will miss their presence here, we wish them Godspeed as they prepare for this new ministry. 7/14/2010

Good Shepherd website linkThe Rev. George Karney has been named Priest-in-Charge of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church. Fr. Karney has been ordained a priest over 50 years. He has served congregations in Connecticut, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Delaware, most recently as an interim priest at several congregations in both Delaware and Pennsylvania. Fr. Karney will begin his appointment with Good Shepherd August 1, 2010. George was an original member of the New Church Commission that planned for Good Shepherd. 7/13/2010

How a Person Ought to Behave in the World, Thursday, August 5, 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., in the parish hall of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Lewes. Beth Cohen, the religious leader of the Seaside Jewish Community in Rehoboth Beach, will lead a session on learning Mussar (moo-sahr). Mussar is a word which means correction or instruction and is the Modern Hebrew word for “ethics.” More than 1,000 years ago Rabbi Sa’adia Ga’on of Babylonia wrote a book with a chapter entitled “How a Person Ought to Behave in the World.” This free event is part of a summer spirituality series held every Thursday evening through Labor Day. Each topic is led by engaging and informed speakers, and ends with fellowship and ice cream. Seekers, Spiritual Treasures at St. Peter’s Square and St. Peter’s are co-sponsoring the series. Monday-Saturday, August 9-14, Sussex Episcopal Workcamp. All churches in the diocese are encouraged to send one to five individuals, ages 14 to 114, to the Sussex Episcopal Workcamp this summer to help fix homes in need of repair throughout Sussex County. No experience is necessary as Job Coaches accompany each Team to work sites. An adult worker/counselor (male or female) is required for each church group. Groups are housed at Camp Arrowhead with R&R time provided by the camp, in addition to a day at the beach in Rehoboth. EfM is a four-year program for small groups developed by the School of Theology at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. Annual Bishop’s Bash, Saturday, September 11, 7:30 p.m. at St. Anne’s Church, Middletown. Episcopal youth are invited to this event as a kickoff for the coming school year. It's an opportunity to meet other Episcopal youth from our Diocese. There will be good food, dancing, an opportunity to ask the Bishop anything you want to know about him and the diocese, and generally to have a good time. Prominent New Testament scholar Dr. Luke Timothy Johnson to give lecture on Friday, September 24 and a Workshop on Saturday, September 25 at Christ Church Christiana Hundred, in Greenville (north of Wilmington). Dr. Johnson is the Robert W. Woodruff Professor of New Testament and Christian Origins at the Candler School of Theology, Emory University and is the author of more than twenty books. A Day of Remembrance – Our Diocesan Service of Apology & Repentance for the Role of the Episcopal Church in the Institution of Slavery, Saturday, October 30, 11:00 a.m. at the Cathedral Church of St. John. Our Diocesan Convention voted overwhelmingly to sponsor this service and to make this apology. Because this is a diocesan service, it is very important for our clergy and members of every congregation to be present. A joint choir and musicians from around the diocese will provide the music. Elected officials have been invited to join us. It should be a powerful occasion.
