Children's Program

This all-day program is free for Ages 4-12. Debbie Nuss, Director.

This program will explore what it means to "Tend the Fire Within" by instilling a sense of confidence that God loves us. The children will learn what they can do that will make a difference in God's world and their own life. The day will include a Bible story, activities, crafts, and cooking their own lunch. The children will also participate in the afternoon worship with a presentation that will illustrate what they have learned during the day.

MORNING WORKSHOPS (choose one)

Poetry Writing: JoAnn Balingit, Poet Laureate of Delaware. JoAnn sees poetry as a facilitator of conversation and community, a way for individuals to navigate the wonders and challenges of being alive. With attention to craft, she believes, poetic language creates vital understandings between people. Come join our Poet Laureate and explore your innerfire through this poetry writing workshop.

Singing Green: Learn beautiful and fun music that can be sung in church and doesn't require printed music. (Save those trees!) Experience the most dynamic and ancient way of singing that is practiced today all over the world. Enjoy ninety minutes of song and reflection about why this music is so vital for the church. You'll go home with a song in your heart and a prayer on your lips. Led by Marilyn Haskel of Trinity, Wall Street, the musician at historic St. Paul's Chapel in New York City. Come sing with me.

Thai Chi: Practiced throughout the world as an effective exercise for health, Tai Chi consists of fluid, gentle movements that are relaxed and slow in tempo. Breathing is deepened and slowed, aiding visual and mental concentration, relaxing the body and allowing the life force, or "Qi," to flow unimpeded throughout the body. It is a suitable form of exercise for just about anyone, regardless of age or fitness level. Tai Chi is a powerfully holistic approach to better health. This workshop will be led by Silver Lotus Training Institute, Lewes.

'Coming Away' to be with God: Listening for God can sometimes be difficult for us in a busy and hurried world. We will focus on the practice of Centering Prayer: its history in the traditions of the Desert Mothers and Fathers and in the monastic traditions of the Church, its development, and its growth. We will learn the practice as well as experience two sessions of Centering Prayer. This workshop will be led by the Rev. Tom Hughes, former rector of Shrewsbury Parish, Kennedyville, MD and Francie Thayer, certified by Contemplative Outreach as a presenter of Centering Prayer. Come join us as we explore this potentially transformative practice of consenting to God's presence and action in our lives.

Seasons of the Spirit - Flowers throughout the Church Year: Mark Bacher, a professional florist & chairperson, will present ways to incorporate God's gifts of creation as we celebrate the church year's most important occasions. Mark's ability to create such theologically sound arrangements, simply & inexpensively, has made him a popular mentor in a variety of churches. This workshop was a huge 'hit' in 2005 and is back by popular demand.

Dream Weavers: Throughout history, dreams have been regarded as a source of inspiration and guidance. This workshop will discuss the meaning of dreams from a Christian perspective, showing how dreams can provide valuable insight especially at times of life transition. We will discuss how to remember your dreams and also provide practical guidelines for understanding your own particular dream language. Led by the Rev. Chris Moore.

Enter the Kingdom Like a Little Child: If you are wondering how to help children be empowered by the Holy Spirit, come and learn about Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. This spiritual formation program for children from ages 3-12 was started in 1954 by Maria Montessori and Sophia Cavaletti. There will be an overview of the program, a presentation, and a time for questions and answers. Presented by Kathy Hanna.

AFTERNOON WORKSHOPS (choose one)

Poetry Writing: JoAnn Balingit, Poet Laureate of Delaware. Simple Appliqué Quilt Squares: Experience a whole new approach to quilting! Create a 12x12 one of a kind quilt square with simple images or geometric shapes. Choose from a variety of colorful and beautiful fabrics to design a piece of original artwork. You can hang it up, make a pillow, or combine it with other squares for a church banner. A good craft to learn for church groups to do also! Charlotte Howard will lead this workshop. There is a $5 supply fee for this workshop.

Set Your Heart and Mind Ablaze: "Tending the fire within" depends upon worship, prayer, and delighting in the Word of God. Come join the Rev. Patty Downing for an engaging bible study.

The Ministry of Prayer: We all have a ministry within the Body of Christ. Some people have several ministries which they use in and for the Church, but each person who sits in a pew week by week has an obligation to do ministry as well... the ministry of prayer. By this I mean much more than having an active participation of joining with the corporate prayers of the worship service. A ministry of prayer is the holding up of the clergy, the bishop, the wardens and others who are striving to maintain the calling to which they are called. This workshop will explore the concept of preparing the space for worship, of "having the preacher's back" during the sermon, of uplifting the congregation in such a way that ears and hearts are open to receive the Word of God in their midst. This workshop will be led by Sister Barbara Jean Brown.

You, Jesus, and Your Resources: A reflection on what the bible says about money; what we may think about money and what money really is. Join the Rev. George Karney as he challenges our perceptions of wealth, riches, and the Christian life.

ECW - Delaware Annual Meeting: This important session will include the annual business meeting of the Episcopal Church Women of the diocese. The new constitution and by-laws will be introduced and adopted. All who plan to attend this meeting will need to complete the Parish Life Day registration
